At our school, we believe that our community service programs provide students with the opportunity to become active members of their larger community, develop critical life skills and knowledge while making a difference in the lives of those in need.
The volunteer activities organized by our students not only serve the elderly and children in the local community, but also actively help disadvantaged groups. This summer, our school launched Star Lighters program, led by our 11th grade student Mandy, to help children with autism. Star Lighters cooperate with the famous Dalian Wanli Charity and aims to generate attention for autistic children.
Star Lighters volunteers don't exactly teach children how to play music or do a drawing. They are mostly focused on the interaction process and benefits it will bring. For example, helping autistic kids to color in sometimes means literally holding and guiding their hands and patiently explaining to them how to use a pencil or choose a color. Some of these students cannot even speak, but the joyful expression on their faces when they see the result of artistic efforts is obvious and self-evident. Their influence has expanded to Shenyang, Xiamen and Hongkong. This fall, Star Lighters has officially become one of the school's ASA program.
Mother's English is an organization started by the mother of one of former DAIS' students. At first, Mother's English was just a program where high school volunteers would provide English language support to the village children in Dalian area. Mother's English has since expanded to not only continue providing English language support to village children, but also offering STEM classes through our Curious Kids program, and even donating furniture to low-income families through Our Home program. Despite Mother's English's growth over the years, it hasn’t strayed from its initial values of supporting the community through service and developing students' character through volunteering. Recently, they have collaborated with Volkswagen and GROB to refurbish slightly used laptops for village children.
We are proud of our students for their academic excellence, personal achievements and contributions in community services.
