What does a teenager look like? In addition to study, we see Huamei students care for Dalian and use their strength to serve the local community. They are not the children in imagination, they are all around us.
DMECC is an organization founded by Ms. Rochelle Mathias and run by DAIS/DHS students to provide charitable services to the community. DMECC Home Improvements Program, Our Home, is designed to improve the lives of families without access to adequate home furnishing across China, with a focus on local communities in Dalian. These furnishings include mattresses, bed frames, tables, desks, and much needed computers.
Following its previous computer distribution event sponsored by Accenture and Volkswagen, Our Home held this event on March 10, 2023. This event was in cooperation with Our Home's corporate partner, GROB-WERKE, a German industrial company that has two offices in Jinshitan, Dalian. The event was over a year in preparation, with the initial connection with GROB-WERKE being made in early January 2022.
At the event, Our Home Ambassador Ein Sel (Grade 11) and Our Home Volunteer Roger Zhang (Grade 11) along with members from the DAIS/DHS administration, DAIS/DHS Marketing Department, and Parent Support Group (PSG) were joined by four employees from GROB. We received 86 laptops to refurbish and donate to families without access to technology in the home.
These 86 laptops will be refurbished by Our Home volunteers under the guidance of DAIS/DHS teachers. We will organize another big distribution event like our 2020 ACDC computer distribution event. These laptops will come with programs preloaded to better enable children in our local families to join our free online Mother's English program, where they can practice their English speaking and listening skills.
These students did not give up the activity because of objective frustrations; they persisted in communicating with all parties and practiced the school's philosophy, one step at a time; we were amazed at the maturity of the students' ideas and their perseverance in putting them into action, bringing one sustainable community project after another to Dalian. Go sea dragons!
