Our Classes

Spring is a great time to look at the changing world around us, and as such we have had several grades look at the requirements for how life grows and develops. Grades 1 and 2 started exploring how animals and plants adapt to different environments as well as what they need to survive and thrive. They are even starting to grow their first plants.

The higher grades started to look at more complex ecosystem webs and how they interact with each other. Grade 6 also started a special garden project to bring life to the balcony area outside the STEAM lab. They produced flyers and visited each class to deliver a presentation to ask for items to be donated. We received several plants, pots, soil and seeds. We are still accepting donations if you would like to contribute! When the warm weather comes, we hope to see it bursting with life and be a great place for students to learn and grow.

The grade 4 students have also completed some exciting work on electricity, culminating in creating and designing their own model houses with working electrical light circuitry. These kinds of hands-on activities help students develop a range of skills to create and produce their own projects as well as provide opportunities for students to be successful in different ways.

We also continue to provide targeted support for English language learners throughout the elementary division. Grade 1 students are working on developing reading comprehension as well as deepening their understanding of phonics. Grade 3 has started exploring non-fiction texts as they start to see the differences between biographies and works of fiction.  Grades 4 and 6 have been working through a unit on poetry and examined the structure and language used to create vivid imagery.

We also have a current project within the school to develop the writer's workshop which consists of a consistent time in the classroom that helps to introduce, practice, and improve writing. one of the first stages of this is the writer's notebook where students can start to write about topics that interest them as well as new vocabulary words that they can use in the right context. The important part of this is to extend the time where students are putting pen to paper and give them a well of ideas to draw from in the future.
